Anchor Creek Kennels, located in the northeast corner of Ohio, has been home to champion, obedience and rally titled dogs since 1974 "AKC Breeder of Merit"
What began as hobby training for a very spotty Dalmatian evolved into a full time avocation. Instructing dog obedience classes was a natural outlet for my secondary education background and lifelong love of dogs. Competitive by nature, Jeff and I spent many weekends accumulating wins for obedience and conformation titles. Pictured here is our Ch. Pompeii’s Promise of Glory, CDX, Can. CD, going High In Trial at Erie Kennel Club in 1975. She earned three American Kennel Club all-breed High In Trial awards and a Dog World Award for obedience in her career. Her paw prints led the way for many to follow.
Our introduction to the Leonberger breed naturally began with one in an obedience class. What a magnificent creature. At the time I had our first German Shepherd Dog in obedience thinking he was as large a dog as we would ever own. Soon we went from medium to large to extra-large dogs.
We share our home with five Leonbergersand little cousin Lucy. Our dogs are all house pets, well socialized and obedience trained; but capable of pinning us down on the sofa or bed if so inclined. They just don’t believe they are not lap dogs.
Jeff is now retired from his nautical career as a ship captain and has joined me in our dog activities full-time which now include rally, nose work and barn hunts. I have taught training classes since 1974. We are both AKC approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluators. I am also an approved Therapy Dog International evaluator.
The health and longevity issues facing the Leonberger dog are of great concern to us. We always place the health of the dog first in any breeding plan. A healthy dog is a long-lived dog. We continue to study and research bloodlines and health related materials before committing to a breeding.
